WWU Students Perform Modern Dance Masterpieces at Faculty Dance Concert

Students from the Western Washington University Dance Department perform the modern dance masterpiece ‘Steps in the Street’, at the Faculty Dance Concert Wednesday, April 14. The dance was choreographed in 1936 by Martha Graham as a protest of Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. “It speaks of the devastation of war,” said Western Instructor Susan Haines, who helped bring the Graham dances to Western. “It still resonates with audiences today.”
Student dancers perform the suite from 'Appalachian Spring,' Martha Graham's most famous ballet.  The dance tells the story of a small group of seventeenth century, American pioneers including a newlywed couple featured in the duet.
